Skardu & Baltistan Tours, Lakes, Cold Desert & Deosai

The gateway to the Karakoram, Shangrila, Upper Kachura, Shigar, Khaplu, Deosai Plains, the Sarfaranga cold desert and the trailheads to K2 and the world's great glaciers.

Skardu sits at 2,228m where the Indus and Shigar rivers meet, the administrative and travel heart of Baltistan. Around it the Karakoram opens up: lakes carved into mountain bowls, a high-altitude cold desert, two Baltistan royal valleys (Shigar and Khaplu), and the trail north toward the great peaks, K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums and Masherbrum.

Skardu is a different feel from Hunza. Where Hunza is a long, populated road, Skardu is a wide, open basin surrounded by raw mountain country. Trips tend to be slower, photographs are more spacious, and the cultural texture, Tibetan-influenced Balti language, polo grounds and Mughal-era forts, is its own world.

Why Baltistan

Why Visit Skardu & Baltistan?

Skardu is the only place in Pakistan where you can have a Karakoram lake reflection, drive through a cold desert, walk a Mughal fort, picnic on the world's second-largest plateau and stand at a glacier trailhead, all in one week.

It also remains less developed than Hunza, which both rewards independent-minded travelers and demands more careful planning around weather, road conditions and altitude (Deosai sits at over 4,000m).

Around Skardu

Lakes Around Skardu

Emerald lake at 2,500m, fed by mountain streams, short forest walk from the road, calm boating.

02

Lower Kachura / Shangrila

Famous heart-shaped lake with the iconic Shangrila Resort and DC-3 aircraft restaurant.

03

Satpara Lake

Large reservoir lake south of Skardu, sunset photography and an easy half-day trip.

Heritage Baltistan

Shigar and Khaplu Heritage

Shigar Valley, 30 km north-east of Skardu, holds the 17th-century Shigar Fort (now a Serena heritage hotel) and the Amburiq Mosque, among the oldest wooden Tibetan-style mosques in the region. Shigar is also the staging point for K2 and Concordia treks.

Khaplu Valley, 100+ km south-east, has Khaplu Palace (another restored heritage hotel) and the Chaqchan Mosque (over 700 years old). Khaplu's villages still farm by traditional irrigation channels and the valley feels noticeably older and quieter than Skardu itself.

Big landscapes

Cold Desert and Deosai Plains

01

Sarfaranga Cold Desert

High-altitude sand dunes (2,200m+) on the way to Shigar, sunset photography, ATV rides, jeep landscape sessions.

02

Deosai National Park

World's second-highest plateau (~4,114m), home to the Himalayan brown bear, golden marmots and Sheosar Lake. Accessible only late June to early October.

03

Manthokha Waterfall

180-foot waterfall en route to Khaplu, a quick photogenic stop.

04

Katpana Lake & Dunes

Smaller cold-desert area closer to Skardu town, with night-stargazing potential.
