Hunza Tours, Karakoram Highway, Lakes & Forts
A scenic road-trip valley: Karimabad, Baltit and Altit forts, Attabad Lake, Passu Cones, Hussaini Bridge, and the Khunjerab Pass on the Chinese border.
Hunza is Pakistan's most photographed mountain valley, a 100 km stretch of the Karakoram Highway running from Nasirabad through Karimabad and Gulmit, past Attabad Lake, Passu Cones, Hussaini Bridge and finally up to the Khunjerab Pass at the Chinese border (4,693m).
The reason Hunza works so well as a tour is that nearly all of its highlights sit along one road, so a 5–7 day itinerary can cover heritage forts, glacial lakes, suspension bridges and the world's highest paved border crossing without any rough off-road sections, making it ideal for honeymooners, families and first-time mountain travelers.
Why Hunza is Famous
Three things drive Hunza's reputation. First, the Karakoram Highway itself, paved, well-maintained and lined with some of the world's tallest peaks (Rakaposhi 7,788m, Ultar Sar 7,388m, Passu Sar 7,478m). Second, two living UNESCO-listed forts (Baltit and Altit) restored by the Aga Khan Cultural Service. Third, a warm and educated Wakhi / Burusho population that makes the valley feel safe, organized and welcoming.
Karimabad and Heritage Forts
Baltit Fort
700-year-old fort above Karimabad with panoramic views of Rakaposhi and Ultar, beautifully restored, with a guided museum walk.
Altit Fort & Royal Garden
Older than Baltit by about 300 years, with the Royal Garden Cafe and a careful conservation project.
Eagle's Nest Viewpoint (Duikar)
Highest viewpoint above Karimabad, famous for sunrise over five 7,000m+ peaks.
Karimabad Bazaar
Walking street of cafes, dried fruit shops, handicrafts and Wakhi cuisine spots.
Attabad Lake and Gulmit
Attabad Lake formed in 2010 after a landslide blocked the Hunza River. Today it is a 21 km stretch of deep-turquoise water with boating, lakeside cafes and the dramatic Atabad tunnels carved through the mountain wall. North of Attabad sits Gulmit, a smaller Wakhi village with a museum, traditional houses and easy access to Borith Lake and the Passu Glacier viewpoint.
Passu, Hussaini and Mountain Viewpoints
- Passu Cones, the cathedral-like ridge visible from the KKH
- Hussaini Suspension Bridge, wooden plank bridge over the Hunza River
- Passu Glacier viewpoint, short walk from the highway
- Borith Lake, small lake good for birdlife in spring and autumn
- Sost, last Pakistani town before the Khunjerab Pass; customs/immigration point
- Shimshal Valley, long detour, for adventurous extensions
Khunjerab Pass Extension
Khunjerab (4,693m) is the world's highest paved international border crossing. The pass opens roughly April to November depending on snow. From Sost the drive takes about 2–3 hours through Khunjerab National Park, with chances to see ibex, marmots and golden marmots. Travelers do not need a Chinese visa to visit the pass itself, only to cross over. Acclimatize before going; altitude effects are real.
