Festival Tours in Pakistan, Kalash, Shandur, Qaqlasht & More
Carefully planned festival travel across Chitral and the Kalash valleys, Chilam Joshi, Uchal, Choimus, the Shandur Polo Festival, and the Qaqlasht gatherings. Real cultural moments, planned by a local Pakistani team.
Festival travel is the most rewarding way to see Chitral and the Kalash valleys, but it is also the easiest to get wrong. Festival dates shift slightly each year, accommodation books out months in advance, road conditions change with the season, and respectful visitor conduct matters more here than anywhere else in Pakistan. The wrong itinerary turns an extraordinary event into a stressful weekend.
Chaqon Global Tours is a Chitrali-owned company based in Lower Chitral. Festivals are not a calendar entry for us, they are a part of life in our home region. We help travelers arrive at the right time, stay in the right village, photograph respectfully, and leave with a real understanding of what they saw.

Kalash Festival Experiences
Chilam Joshi (Spring)
The most famous Kalash festival, welcoming spring, dancing, music, traditional ritual milk and bread offerings. Mid-May, all three valleys.
Uchal (Harvest)
Smaller, quieter, more village-focused. Celebrates wheat harvest in mid-August.
Choimus (Winter Solstice)
The most sacred Kalash festival, 7 days in mid-December. Significant ritual content, limited to fewer outside visitors. Travel is harder in winter; planning is essential.
Shandur Polo Festival
The world's highest polo ground (3,700 m) hosts a 3-day free-style polo tournament between Chitral and Gilgit teams every July. Beyond polo, there is a folk music programme, paragliding demonstration days, and a tented village. Accommodation is tents (organised by us), and altitude planning is non-negotiable.
- 3-day tournament, usually 7–9 July
- 3,700 m altitude, acclimatisation built into our route
- Tented camp accommodation (pre-booked)
- Folk music and dance evening programmes
- Best photographed early morning and late afternoon
- Warm layers required even in July
- Limited mobile signal, we carry sat support
- We operate from our Chitral base, short transfer
Qaqlasht and Chitral Cultural Gatherings
The Qaqlasht plateau above Upper Chitral hosts an annual spring festival in late April with horse riding, folk music and traditional foods. Smaller in scale than Shandur but easier to combine with a regular Chitral itinerary. Broghil and other upper valleys also host seasonal events that we add when confirmed.
Festival Travel Planning Notes
- Book 2–3 months in advance for Chilam Joshi and Shandur
- Travel insurance recommended for Shandur (altitude)
- Carry warm layers for mountain festivals year-round
- Camera gear: 24–105 mm covers most needs; bring spare batteries
- Drone use requires permission and is restricted in Kalash villages
- Most festival accommodation is tented or simple guest houses
- Vehicle reaches Kalash; final access into festival ground is on foot
- Cash recommended, limited ATMs in festival valleys
Responsible Visitor Guidelines
- Always ask before photographing Kalash women
- Do not enter ritual spaces unless invited
- No flash photography in religious moments
- Dress modestly, knees and shoulders covered
- Don't offer alcohol to villagers
- Stay with the guide; do not wander into private areas
- Buy crafts directly from village artisans
- Tip community ushers and hosts respectfully
Why this matters
Kalash is a small community of fewer than 5,000 people. Festival tourism funds the community but also pressures it. Respectful behaviour is what keeps the festivals open to outside visitors in coming years.
