Balochistan & Gwadar Coastal Road Trips

The Makran Coastal Highway, Kund Malir Beach, Hingol National Park's Princess of Hope, and the Gwadar headland, Pakistan's most underrated road trip.

Balochistan is Pakistan's largest province by area and its least visited. The 600+ km Makran Coastal Highway (N-10) runs from Karachi west to Gwadar along one of the most photogenic coastlines in South Asia, turquoise sea on one side, sandstone canyons and mud-volcano hills on the other.

This is a road-trip destination, not a sightseeing destination. The experience is the drive itself: long quiet stretches, dramatic geological formations, fishing villages, military checkposts and a sky that opens up wider than anywhere else in Pakistan. Trips are typically 4–7 days with the right vehicle and timing.

Overview

Balochistan and Gwadar Travel Overview

Most travelers do not visit interior Balochistan (Quetta, Ziarat, Bolan), for which security and access are managed differently. Our focus is the Makran coast: Karachi → Kund Malir → Hingol → Pasni → Gwadar, a route that is well-traveled by domestic photographers, road-trippers and adventure groups during the cooler months.

The window is October to March. Outside that, heat, humidity and cyclonic weather make the coast difficult and the sandstone road sections risky.

The road

Makran Coastal Highway

The N-10 was completed in 2004 and is one of Pakistan's most scenic highways. From the western edge of Karachi, the road climbs into the Mubarak hills, drops into the Hub area, and then begins a long, lightly-trafficked run west along the Arabian Sea. There are very few towns and very few fuel stops, we plan refuels, food and security checkpoints in advance.

Day 2 highlights

Kund Malir and Hingol National Park

01

Kund Malir Beach

Pakistan's most photographed beach, white sand cove between cliffs and sea, no built-up resorts.

02

Princess of Hope

Natural sandstone rock formation in Hingol, appears to wear a flowing dress; a Pakistan road-trip icon.

03

Sphinx of Balochistan

Sphinx-shaped sandstone outcrop along the same Hingol stretch, best at golden hour.

04

Hinglaj Mata Mandir

Important Hindu pilgrimage site inside Hingol National Park, peaceful, atmospheric, respectful visit recommended.

05

Mud Volcanoes (Chandragup)

Active mud volcano cones near the highway, short walk to the rim.

06

Hingol River Gorge

Crocodile-bearing river crossing Hingol park, viewpoints from the bridge.

Far west

Gwadar Coastal Experience

Gwadar sits on a hammer-shaped peninsula about 650 km west of Karachi. It is most photogenic at sunrise and sunset, when the Koh-e-Batil hammerhead cliff catches the light. Highlights include the Marine Drive walking promenade, Hammerhead Top viewpoint, Padi Zirr Lagoon, Gwadar West Bay fishing harbour and the East Bay shoreline.

Connectivity in Gwadar can be unpredictable. There are domestic flights from Karachi and Islamabad and a small set of mid-range hotels. We arrange transport, hotel and any required No-Objection Certificates before your trip.
