Pakistan is one of the great road-trip countries, partly because the distances are huge, partly because the scenery changes every 200 km, and partly because the roads themselves are landmarks. The Karakoram Highway is on most lists of the world's most spectacular drives. The Makran Coastal Highway runs through Mars-like terrain to the Gwadar coast. The Chitral road climbs through Lowari Tunnel into a valley that feels closer to Tajikistan than to Punjab.
A good road trip here is about choosing the right route for the right vehicle and the right season, and then driving it properly, with rest stops, fuel planning, and the freedom to stop where the photo is, not where the itinerary says.
Pakistan by Road
Driving here is unlike anywhere else. You can leave a Mughal city in the morning, cross a desert by noon, and reach a glacier viewpoint by sunset, across the span of three drives. Or you can take a single 1,500-km road through the Karakoram from Chilas to Khunjerab Pass on the Chinese border and see eight valleys, three glaciers and a dozen river confluences without leaving the highway.
Best Road Trip Routes
Karakoram Highway (KKH)
Islamabad → Naran → Chilas → Hunza → Khunjerab Pass. The classic Pakistan road trip, 1,300 km of mountain highway.
Chitral Mountain Road
Islamabad → Dir → Lowari Tunnel → Chitral → Kalash. Mountain culture rather than glacier scenery.
Hunza ↔ Skardu Loop
Connected via Khaplu and the newly improved Skardu road, a 9-day premium northern loop.
Swat / Kumrat Forest Drive
Islamabad → Mingora → Kalam → Kumrat. Shorter and easier, perfect for first-time road trippers.
Makran Coastal Highway
Karachi → Ormara → Pasni → Gwadar. Mars-like terrain, fishing villages, Hingol National Park.
Punjab Heritage Loop
Lahore → Multan → Bahawalpur → Cholistan → Lahore. Best winter route.

Route Planning and Safety Notes
- Plan fuel stops on KKH, long gaps between stations
- Carry cash, many remote stations don't take cards
- Avoid night driving on mountain roads
- Check road status before departure (especially passes)
- Carry a basic tool kit and spare tyre check
- Drive defensively, local trucks have right of way in practice
- Mobile signal drops between valleys, download offline maps
- Always carry warm layers above 3,000 m even in summer
Driver on request
Most travelers prefer to be driven on Pakistani highways, local driver familiarity matters on long routes. Self-drive is possible but recommended only for experienced travelers with prior regional driving experience.
