Hunza Travel Guide for First Time Visitors
Hunza is the postcard valley of northern Pakistan, and for very good reason. Snow peaks, ancient forts, glacier lakes and famously friendly people make it one of the most loved destinations in the country. This guide from Chaqon Global Tours is written for first-time visitors who want a clear, practical sense of what to see, how to move and how to plan.
1. Why Hunza is famous
Hunza Valley sits along the Karakoram Highway in Gilgit-Baltistan, surrounded by giants like Rakaposhi, Ultar and the Passu Cones. The mix of dramatic scenery, accessible roads, well-kept forts and high literacy among locals gives Hunza a special feel, relaxed, organised and welcoming.
2. Karimabad and central Hunza
Karimabad is the cultural and tourist heart of central Hunza. It is the natural base for a first trip, with hotels at every level, restaurants, cafes and a charming bazaar. Sunset over Rakaposhi from Karimabad is one of those classic Pakistan moments.
3. Baltit Fort and Altit Fort
These two restored forts are essential stops. Baltit Fort sits high above Karimabad and was once the seat of the Mir of Hunza. Altit Fort is even older and includes a beautifully restored royal garden. Take both with a local guide who can explain the dynasty and architecture properly.
4. Attabad Lake and Upper Hunza
The turquoise Attabad Lake formed after a 2010 landslide and is now one of the most photographed places in Pakistan. You can boat across, eat at lakeside restaurants and stay in lakeside hotels. Beyond Attabad you enter Upper Hunza (Gojal) with even more dramatic scenery.
5. Passu Cones and Hussaini area
The jagged Passu Cones are the iconic image of Hunza. Nearby you can walk on the historic Hussaini Suspension Bridge, view the Passu Glacier and stop for tea in tiny mountain villages.
6. Khunjerab Pass extension
For travelers with time, Khunjerab Pass at over 4,700m on the Pakistan–China border is a memorable add-on. Access depends on season, weather and current border policy. Going up early in the day with a good vehicle is essential.
7. Hunza for families, couples and photographers
- Families, base in Karimabad with day trips. Avoid long single-day pushes to Khunjerab with small children.
- Couples, combine Karimabad with a night at Attabad Lake and one at Passu for the best mix of comfort and views. Check our honeymoon tours.
- Photographers, pre-plan sunrise/sunset spots at Eagle's Nest, Duikar, Attabad and Passu viewpoints.
8. Road trip and vehicle planning notes
Hunza is one of the most rewarding road trip destinations in Pakistan. The KKH is paved most of the way but has long driving days. We usually plan it from Islamabad–Naran–Chilas–Gilgit–Hunza, or fly Islamabad–Gilgit and drive only the scenic part. See our vehicle options for HiAce, Land Cruiser, Prado and Coaster choices.
9. Suggested itinerary ideas
6-day quick Hunza loop
Fly Islamabad–Gilgit, drive to Karimabad, two nights central Hunza, one night Attabad, one night Passu, fly back from Gilgit.
8-day classic KKH road trip
Drive up via Naran and Chilas, full Hunza experience, optional Khunjerab day, return drive or flight from Gilgit.
Driving times depend on season, road condition, availability and your starting city, we adjust before every trip.
