How to Plan a Chitral and Kalash Tour

By Chaqon Global Tours·Jul 4, 2026· 6 min read

Planning a Chitral and Kalash tour is one of the most rewarding travel projects you can take on in Pakistan, and one of the most misunderstood. Many first-time visitors treat Kalash as a quick day trip and miss the cultural side completely. At Chaqon Global Tours, we are based right in Chitral, and this guide walks you through exactly how we plan combined Chitral + Kalash trips for our guests.

1. Why combine Chitral and Kalash in one trip

Chitral and Kalash are two very different experiences inside the same valley system. Chitral town is the calm cultural base, bazaars, old mosques, hotels and easy logistics. Kalash is a living indigenous culture about 2–3 hours away by jeep, depending on season, road condition and your starting point. Combining them in one tour gives you mountain scenery, cultural depth and time to rest comfortably.

2. Chitral as the natural travel base

We always recommend using Chitral town as the anchor of the trip. It has the best mix of hotels, restaurants, mechanics, fuel, mobile coverage and medical support. From Chitral you can run day trips or overnights into Kalash, Garam Chashma, Chitral Gol or Upper Chitral. Most of our Chitral tours use this structure.

3. Understanding Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir

Kalash Valley is not one valley, it is three: Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir.

  • Bumburet, the largest and most visited valley. Best for first-time visitors, with the widest choice of guesthouses, the main museum and easier road access.
  • Rumbur, quieter, smaller and more traditional. A great second night if you want to feel village life with fewer travelers around.
  • Birir, the least visited valley. Smaller, more agricultural and very calm outside of festival times.

We usually pair Bumburet with either Rumbur or Birir, depending on group size and how much driving you want to do.

4. Suggested 3-day, 5-day and 7-day trip ideas

3 days, Short cultural taste

  1. Arrive Chitral, evening in Shahi Bazaar.
  2. Full-day Bumburet (Kalash), overnight in a Kalash guesthouse.
  3. Return via Bumburet viewpoints, departure from Chitral.

5 days, Balanced cultural trip

  1. Arrive Chitral.
  2. Bumburet day with overnight in Kalash.
  3. Move to Rumbur for a quieter night.
  4. Return to Chitral, afternoon at Garam Chashma hot springs.
  5. Departure day with a free morning.

7 days, Deep Chitral + Kalash

  1. Arrive Chitral.
  2. Bumburet, culture day.
  3. Rumbur overnight.
  4. Birir half-day, back to Chitral.
  5. Garam Chashma day-trip.
  6. Chitral Gol viewpoint and town day.
  7. Departure.

Exact pacing always depends on season, route condition, availability, group size and your starting city, we adjust this for every booking.

5. Transport and vehicle planning

The road into Kalash is narrow, winding and shared with local jeeps. A 4x4 jeep is recommended for comfort and safety. For larger groups or families with elders, we pair a Land Cruiser or HiAce with a backup jeep where needed. You can browse our typical vehicle options or let us suggest the right one for your itinerary.

6. Hotel and guest house planning

In Chitral town you get a mid-range hotel with hot water, Wi-Fi and proper meals. In Kalash, most stays are family-run guesthouses with simple rooms and shared experiences. We pre-confirm rooms in advance, especially around festival weeks.

7. Cultural etiquette in Kalash Valley

Kalash people are warm hosts but their valleys are not a tourist set. Ask before taking close-up photos, avoid entering homes or ceremonial spaces without invitation, and dress modestly even outside of villages. A good guide makes a huge difference, see our travel guide support.

8. Festival vs non-festival travel

Festivals like Chilam Joshi (spring), Uchal (summer) and Choimus (winter) bring incredible energy to the valleys, but rooms book out very early. If you want a calmer cultural trip with more space to listen and learn, the non-festival weeks are beautiful too. Festival dates shift each year, always verify before booking flights.

9. Practical planning notes

  • Carry cash in PKR, card use is limited in Kalash.
  • Bring warm layers even in summer, Kalash evenings cool down quickly.
  • Allow buffer days around flights, Chitral PIA flights are weather-dependent.
  • Avoid drone use without local permission.
  • Drinking water: stick to sealed bottles or filtered water.
