Chitral and Hunza are two of the most rewarding family destinations in Pakistan, but the way you plan a family trip is very different from a backpacker trip. The route should be slower, the vehicle more comfortable, the hotels more reliable, and the daily distances much shorter. This guide is built from real family trips we have hosted at Chaqon Global Tours.
Why family trips need careful planning
Mountain roads in northern Pakistan are scenic but long. With children or elderly travelers, comfort is a bigger factor than mileage. A trip that looks impressive on paper can be exhausting in practice. The best family itineraries do less, but enjoy more.
Chitral vs Hunza for families
Chitral is gentler, less commercial, more cultural, and ideal for families that want a calm, story-rich trip with a focus on Kalash, Garam Chashma and the Hindukush. Hunza is more developed, more famous, has better roads in many sections, and is perfect for families that want viewpoints, lakes and easier logistics.
Many of our family guests combine both, a few days in Chitral and a few days in Hunza, with our team handling the transfer in between.
Vehicle comfort matters more than budget
Family trips need:
- A 4x4 SUV or a comfortable van for longer drives.
- Functional air conditioning and good suspension.
- Enough space, never squeeze 7 people into a 5-seater.
- An experienced mountain driver who knows when to slow down.
See our vehicle rental fleet for family-friendly options.
Hotel selection
For families, we always pre-confirm:
- Hot water and reliable bathrooms.
- Family rooms or connecting rooms.
- Clean kitchens and a kid-friendly menu.
- Heating in winter or shoulder months.
Our hotel booking support team handles this for you.
Travel pacing
Our pacing rules for family trips:
- Maximum 5–6 hours on the road per day.
- Stop every 90 minutes for a tea break, photo or short walk.
- Plan one rest day in the middle of a 7-day trip.
- Never combine a long drive with a heavy activity in the same day.
Food and rest stops
We choose food stops that we have personally checked, clean kitchens, vegetarian-friendly options and reasonable prices. For families with very young children, we recommend carrying simple snacks (biscuits, fruit, juice boxes) for emergencies.
Children and elders
For children: bring favourite toys, motion-sickness medicine if needed, warm layers for evenings, and a small backpack for them to carry their own “travel kit.” For elders: prioritise hotels with elevators or ground-floor rooms, avoid very high altitudes on the first 2 days, and use cushioned seats for long drives.
Suggested route ideas
- Chitral family trip (5 days): Chitral town → Kalash Valley → Garam Chashma → Chitral.
- Hunza family trip (6 days): Islamabad → Naran → Hunza (Karimabad, Attabad Lake) → Islamabad.
- Combined Chitral + Hunza (10–12 days): via Shandur in summer, or via Islamabad in other seasons.
