Chitral Valley sits at the foot of the Hindukush in northern Pakistan and is one of the most beautiful regions our team at Chaqon Global Tours works with every season. This complete travel guide is written from the ground up by a local guiding company based in Lower Chitral, and it is built to help you plan your first trip with confidence, not a copy-paste article from somewhere else.
Why Chitral feels different
Most travelers come to northern Pakistan for Hunza or Skardu, but Chitral has a calmer, more local character. The valley still feels lived-in: Khowar is spoken in the bazaars, Kalash culture is a short jeep ride away, and old wooden mosques sit between apricot orchards. You travel here for slow days, friendly conversation, jeep roads beside the Chitral River, and a real sense that you have left the highway behind.
Top places to visit in and around Chitral

- Shahi Mosque & Mehtar's Fort area, the historic heart of the town.

- Qaqlasht meadow in Upper Chitral and the long road towards Broghil Valley for adventurous travelers.

Best travel styles for Chitral
Chitral works for very different kinds of trips. Families come for short, comfortable loops between Chitral town and Kalash. Cultural travelers stay longer to experience villages and festivals. Adventure travelers push north to Mastuj, Broghil and the Shandur side. We help you pick the right style before you book.
Family travel
Stay in Chitral town hotels with hot water and reliable food. Do day-trips to Kalash and Garam Chashma rather than long jeep days. A 4–5 day trip is usually enough.
Cultural travel
Plan 5–7 days. Sleep at least two nights in Kalash (Bumburet or Rumbur), one in Chitral, and add Garam Chashma. If your trip lines up with a Kalash festival, plan 2–3 months ahead because village guesthouses fill quickly.
Festival travel
If you are coming for the Shandur Polo Festival, plan a Chitral-anchored trip of 6–8 days. Add Mastuj as a midway base and use a strong 4x4 jeep for the Shandur road.
Adventure travel
Trekkers and overland travelers love the routes from Upper Chitral towards Broghil or Tirich Mir base camp. Roads are long and remote, you need a local team that knows them well.
How to get to Chitral
There are two main ways to reach Chitral. By road through the Lowari Tunnel from Islamabad takes 12–14 hours and is open all year. By air, PIA flies Islamabad → Chitral in around an hour, but flights are weather-dependent. We recommend driving in and flying out, or booking flexible plans with a buffer day on either side.
Where to stay
Chitral town has a small range of mid-range hotels and a few high-end guesthouses. In Kalash, you mostly stay in family-run guesthouses, which is part of the experience. In Upper Chitral, places like Mastuj have simple but comfortable lodges. We pre-confirm rooms based on your travel style and group size.

Practical travel notes
