Vehicle Rental Guide for Northern Pakistan

By Chaqon Global Tours·Jul 4, 2026· 6 min read

Choosing the right vehicle is one of the most important decisions you will make before any trip to northern Pakistan. Routes change with the season, group sizes vary, and what works on a smooth Karakoram Highway stretch is rarely the right fit for a remote jeep track to a high pasture. At Chaqon Global Tours we run trips across Chitral, Kalash, Shandur, Hunza, Skardu and the wider north every season, so this guide is built from real road experience, not generic advice.

Why Vehicle Choice Matters in Northern Pakistan

Northern Pakistan is not one road. It is a mix of dual-carriageways, narrow valley roads, river-side tracks and high-altitude jeep routes. Your right vehicle depends on a combination of factors: mountain conditions, luggage volume, family comfort, road surface, group size, weather and the type of destination. Travel times depend on season, route condition, availability, group size and your starting city, never plan to the minute.

Pick the wrong vehicle and a perfectly planned trip becomes uncomfortable. Pick the right one and even a long travel day feels easy.

Cars, SUVs, Jeeps, Vans and Coasters

Here is a quick comparison of vehicle types we commonly use for our tours:

Vehicle TypeBest ForNotes
Sedan / CarCity transfers, couples, small groupsBetter for smoother routes and main highways
SUVFamilies and comfort travelGood for luggage and long mountain routes
Jeep / 4x4Rough mountain routes and high passesDepends on road condition, season and destination
Van (Hiace)Medium groups and friends/family toursUseful when comfort and luggage space matter
CoasterLarge groups, students, corporateSuitable for group movement on main routes

Vehicle Planning for Chitral and Kalash

For Chitral town, the Shahi Bazaar area and short trips inside the valley, an SUV or a strong sedan is usually fine. For the Kalash Valley road into Bumburet and Rumbur, a 4x4 jeep is more comfortable and safer, especially in spring rains or after winter snow. For Garam Chashma, Qaqlasht and the long road towards Shandur or Broghil, plan around a jeep or a high-clearance SUV depending on the season and current road condition. Some routes may need stronger vehicles depending on weather.

Vehicle Planning for Hunza and Skardu

The Karakoram Highway and the Skardu road are tarmac for most of their length, so a comfortable SUV or van handles them well. For families and honeymooners, an SUV with proper luggage space and good seats matters more than horsepower. For day-trips to Khunjerab Pass, Hopper Glacier, Deosai or Khaplu side valleys, a jeep is usually the better choice. Build photography stops into the plan, long-distance comfort and stopovers make these routes special.

Family and Group Vehicle Tips

  • Choose enough luggage space, kids and elders need room.
  • Avoid overcrowding; one extra seat of comfort beats one extra body.
  • Consider the comfort of grandparents and children on long days.
  • Plan rest stops every 90–120 minutes on mountain roads.
  • Keep the route flexible, your team should be able to switch vehicles for harder sections.
  • Confirm vehicle type, model and driver in writing before travel.

Questions to Ask Before Booking a Vehicle

This is the short checklist we use with every client at Chaqon Global Tours:

  1. How many travelers will be in the vehicle?
  2. How many bags and what size?
  3. Is the route mainly city or mountain?
  4. Do we need a 4x4 for any section?
  5. Is the driver included, and is he experienced on this route?
  6. Is the vehicle suitable for families with kids or elders?
  7. What is the pickup and drop location?
  8. What is the plan if road conditions change suddenly?

FAQs

Which vehicle is best for northern Pakistan?

There is no single answer, it depends on route, group size, season and comfort level. An SUV is the safest all-round choice for most family trips. Jeeps are essential for high-altitude and rough mountain routes.

Do mountain routes need a jeep?

Many do, especially Shandur, Broghil, Deosai, Fairy Meadows access and upper Kalash in bad weather. Main highways and most Hunza/Skardu routes are fine in a strong SUV.

Can I book vehicle rental only?

Yes. See our vehicle fleet or read our vehicle rental and travel services page for standalone rentals with a driver.

Can vehicle rental be included in a full tour?

Yes, every custom tour we design via Customize My Tour includes a vehicle matched to your route, group size and comfort needs.
