Skardu Travel Guide: Lakes, Deserts and Valleys

By Chaqon Global Tours·Jul 4, 2026· 6 min read

Skardu is the heart of Baltistan and the gateway to some of the highest mountains on earth. Unlike Hunza, which is concentrated along a single highway, Skardu spreads into multiple valleys with their own characters, lakes, cold deserts, fortified palaces and high plateaus. This guide from Chaqon Global Tours helps you understand the region before you start planning.

1. Why visit Skardu and Baltistan

Skardu offers a different feel from the Hunza side of Gilgit-Baltistan. The scale is bigger, the valleys are wider and the cultural roots run deep into old Balti heritage. You travel here for raw mountains, lake silence and old palaces, and as a launchpad for big treks.

2. Skardu as a travel base

Skardu town is the obvious base. It has the airport, the best variety of hotels, restaurants and reliable connectivity. Most trips run as a series of day-trips and short overnights from Skardu into the surrounding valleys.

3. Kachura lakes and Satpara Lake

  • Lower Kachura (Shangrila), easy half-day trip with the famous resort and the heart-shaped lake.
  • Upper Kachura, a short walk from Shangrila, quieter and very photogenic.
  • Satpara Lake, on the way to Deosai, with viewpoints and walking paths.

4. Shigar Valley and Shigar Fort

Shigar is one of the cultural highlights of Baltistan. The restored Shigar Fort (Fong Khar) is run as a Serena heritage property and gives you a real sense of old royal life. The valley itself is full of apricot orchards, old mosques and traditional villages.

5. Khaplu Valley and heritage travel

Khaplu is a longer day from Skardu but well worth it. The Khaplu Palace is another beautifully restored heritage property. The drive itself, along the Shyok river, is one of the most scenic in Pakistan.

6. Cold Desert and Sarfaranga area

Near Skardu you will find the Cold Desert (Sarfaranga), sand dunes surrounded by snow mountains. It is a surreal sunset spot and a favorite of photographers.

7. Deosai planning note

The Deosai Plateau is one of the highest plateaus in the world and is accessible in summer only. Access timing depends on season, weather and road conditions, plan it as a full day from Skardu with an experienced driver.

8. Skardu for families, couples and adventure travelers

  • Families, pick Skardu town hotels and do shorter loops to Kachura, Shigar and Cold Desert.
  • Couples, stay one night at Shangrila or Shigar Fort for atmosphere, and check our luxury tours for upgraded heritage stays.
  • Adventure travelers, Skardu is the trailhead for K2 Base Camp, Snow Lake and many other big treks. See trekking adventure.
